Apple Strategizing ‘Watch X’ Release in Commemoration of Smartwatch’s 10th Anniversary

While the upcoming release of the Apple Watch is anticipated to bring modest changes, the company is reportedly in the process of reimagining the device in honor of its 10th anniversary.

Dubbed “Watch X,” this wearable will commemorate a decade of Apple’s smartwatch innovation with what Bloomberg correspondent Mark Gurman describes as the “most significant transformation to date,” conveyed through his weekly PowerOn newsletter. Notably, the original Apple Watch was introduced in 2014 and became available for purchase in 2015, indicating a potential launch timeframe for the Apple Watch X around 2024 or 2025. The design team is actively pursuing a slimmer watch casing and exploring new approaches to fastening watch bands, as Gurman reports. The current band attachment method occupies valuable space within the wearable’s framework, space that could otherwise accommodate a larger battery or other essential components. This overhaul might include a transition to a magnetic band attachment mechanism.

Furthermore, Gurman anticipates that Apple will incorporate technology enabling blood pressure monitoring via the watch and introduce a microLED display, delivering enhanced color reproduction and clarity compared to the existing models.

Apple’s announcement event for the Apple Watch Series 9 is scheduled for September 12. This occasion promises an evolutionary update to the Apple Watch Series 8. Speculation and leaks suggest that the device’s dimensions will remain consistent with current models, at 41 and 45 millimeters respectively. The new iteration is also projected to feature a swifter processor and fresh color choices, accompanied by compatibility with watchOS 10. Simultaneously, Apple is likely to unveil the iPhone 15 during the same event. Each variant of the phone is anticipated to embrace a Dynamic Island in lieu of a top-notch design, alongside a narrower bezel, improved camera capabilities, and a transition to a USB-C charging port, replacing Apple’s proprietary Lightning charger. Noteworthy rumors from the past week also hint at the possibility of the phone offering a maximum storage capacity of 2TB, potentially marking the highest storage level ever available on an iPhone.
